This Virginia Studies Civil War Jeopardy Game includes a fun, Jeopardy-style game to review the causes of the Civil War and Virginia’s Role in the Civil War. Versions of the review game are included for both PowerPoint and Google Slides.

What will students review with this Virginia Studies Civil War Jeopardy Game?

25 questions are included in a Jeopardy-style game to review and practice the following skills:

• the role of John Brown and the impact of the raid at Harper’s Ferry
• how the institution of slavery was the cause of the Civil War, and secondary factors that contributed to the secession of the southern states
• major events and issues that divided Virginians and led to secession, war, and the creation of West Virginia
• the Virginia Ordinance of Secession
• major events and battles that took place in Virginia
• the leadership roles of Virginians including Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Robert E. Lee, William Harvey Carney, Winfield Scott, and Powhatan Beaty
• the leadership roles of non-Virginians including Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant
• the experiences and contributions of Indigenous people and enslaved and free Blacks and their allies during the war including Elizabeth Van Lew, Mary Bowser, Harriet Tubman, and Clara Barton
• the outcomes of the Contraband Decision and the Confiscation Acts

Each question is linked to a slide with the answer so that students can quickly and easily check their answers.

What formats of the game are provided?

This resource includes versions of the Civil War Jeopardy Game for BOTH PowerPoint and Google Slides. The questions used with each version are the same.

How is this Virginia Studies interactive game played?

The PowerPoint version of this Jeopardy-style game should be played in presentation mode. Category values disappear when they are clicked on. The category values can be reset anytime by exiting the presentation and reopening it. You can type scores onto a scoreboard while playing in presentation mode. The presentation has been coded to help you easily navigate from the category board to questions and answers without scrolling.

The Google Slides version of this Jeopardy-style review game should be played in full screen, edit mode. Instructions and a video tutorial are provided that show how this is done. You can type scores onto a scoreboard but the category values do not disappear when they are clicked on. This is a limitation of Google Slides. But, markers are provided alongside the category board that you can drag and drop over the category values after they have been used. The presentation has been coded to help you easily navigate from the category board to questions and answers without scrolling.
