• describe how the institution of slavery was the cause of the Civil War, and secondary factors that contributed to the secession of the southern states
• explain major events and issues that divided Virginians and led to secession, war, and the creation of West Virginia
• analyze the Virginia Ordinance of Secession
• identify major events and battles that took place in Virginia
• identify and explain the leadership roles of Virginians including Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Robert E. Lee, William Harvey Carney, Winfield Scott, and Powhatan Beaty
• identify and explain the leadership roles of non-Virginians including Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant
• evaluate the experiences and contributions of Indigenous people and enslaved and free Blacks and their allies during the war including Elizabeth Van Lew, Mary Bowser, Harriet Tubman, and Clara Barton
• explain the outcomes of the Contraband Decision and the Confiscation Acts
