  • identify and explain the leadership roles of non-Virginians including Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant
  • evaluate the experiences and contributions of Indigenous people and enslaved and free Blacks and their allies during the war including Elizabeth Van Lew, Mary Bowser, Harriet Tubman, and Clara Barton
  • explain the outcomes of the Contraband Decision and the Confiscation Acts
