This Sound Unit comes with hands-on science lessons and assessments! Everything you need to teach how sounds are formed, sound waves, pitch, and how sound and matter are related is included here. Save time planning, and your students will love completing the hands-on activities found in this unit.

What topics are covered in this Sound Unit?

This Sound Unit includes 6 detailed lesson plans. All lessons are hands-on and incorporate literacy skills. Students will–

• Explain that sound is a form of mechanical energy produced and transmitted by vibrating matter
• Model sound (compression) waves
• Explain that sound travels in compression waves and must have a medium through which to travel
• Experiment with pitch and conclude that objects vibrating rapidly have a higher pitch than objects vibrating more slowly
• Analyze how sound travels through solids, liquids, and gases
• Classify musical instruments based on the way they produce sound
• Design and construct an instrument that produces at least two different pitches

This Sound Unit is specifically aligned with the Virginia science SOL 5.5, although it closely matches most science standards related to how sounds are formed, sound waves, pitch, and how sound and matter are related.

This unit has been updated to align with the 2018 Science SOLs AND the 2025 Science Instructional Guides.
