What topics are covered in this Ecosystems Unit?

This Ecosystems Unit includes 8 detailed lesson plans. All lessons are hands-on and incorporate literacy skills. Students will investigate–

• Examples of populations, communities, and ecosystems
• The relationships between living and nonliving components in an ecosystem
• How animals adapt to their unique habitats
• The similarities and differences between food chains and food webs
• How energy moves through an ecosystem using food webs
• Examples of producers, consumers, and decomposers
• How changes in an organism’s niche and habitat may occur at various stages in its life cycle
• How to use a dichotomous key to identify organisms

What standards are covered?

This Ecosystems Unit is specifically aligned with the Virginia science SOL 4.3, although it closely matches most science standards related to ecosystems, food webs, life cycles, and dichotomous keys.

This unit has been updated to align with the 2018 Science SOLs AND the 2025 Science Instructional Guides.
