This Matter Unit comes with hands-on science lessons and assessments! Everything you need to teach that matter is composed of atoms, the effects of temperature on matter, and mixtures and solutions is included here. What topics are covered in this Matter Unit?

This Matter Unit includes 6 detailed lesson plans. All lessons are hands-on and incorporate literacy skills. Students will–

• Define matter, mass, and volume
• Analyze the properties of matter
• Prove that matter of any type can be subdivided into particles called atoms that are too small to see but can be detected by other means
• Demonstrate the effects of temperature on matter
• Explain that the total mass of matter is unchanged during a phase change
• Define and model mixtures and solutions
• Explain that matter is conserved when it is combined

This Matter Unit is specifically aligned with the Virginia science SOL 5.6, although it closely matches most science standards related to matter being composed of atoms, the effects of temperature on matter, and mixtures and solutions.

This unit has been updated to align with the 2018 Science SOLs AND the 2025 Science Instructional Guides.
