In this Virginia Studies Virginia Indians Escape Room, students are trapped and must find a key! The only way to find the key is to successfully complete six activities about Virginia’s native peoples. These escape room activities are easy to set up and lots of fun for students!

Topics covered:

• The major language groups of Virginia
• Climate in Virginia
• How the climate and environment influenced what Virginia Indians ate, wore, and lived in
• Important American Indian archaeological sites (Werowocomoco, Jamestown)
• American Indians in Virginia today

What escape room activities are included?

When completing the activities, students will use critical thinking and inference skills. Challenges include activities such as:

• Reading information and answering comprehension questions to solve a puzzle
• Decoding places on a map of Virginia to learn about Virginia’s major language groups and tribes
• Decoding information about the ways Virginia Indians maintain their cultural heritage
• Identifying true and false facts about Virginia Indians, past and present
• Matching terms to their descriptions to create secret codes

Are students able to complete any escape room activities digitally?

An option is provided for students to submit their final code through Google Forms. When using this option, students can self-check their work. If you do not have access to technology in your classroom, an option is also provided for students to check their work on paper.
