American Revolution Escape Room – Virginia Studies SOL VS.5

Are you looking for a fun way to review Virginia during the American Revolution? Look no further! This Virginia Studies American Revolution Escape Room has everything you need! Whether teaching Virginia Studies remotely or in-person, this classroom escape room is easy to set up, and students will have lots of fun reviewing what they have learned!

In this Virginia Studies American Revolution Escape Room, students are in the process of time traveling back in time to study Virginia’s role in the Revolutionary War when their time machine malfunctions! The only way to repair the time machine and return to the present is for students to successfully complete seven challenges.

What will students learn with this classroom escape room?

Topics covered:

• the reasons why the colonists declared independence
• the Declaration of Independence
• the important contributions, leadership, and experiences of Virginians during the war including, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, George Mason, and James Armistead Lafayette
• the roles of women, free Blacks, enslaved Blacks, and Indigenous People during the Revolutionary War
• how the French and the Marquis de Lafayette helped the Continental Army win the war
• the importance of the American victory at Yorktown
• the reasons for the relocation of Virginia’s capital from Williamsburg to Richmond

What escape room activities are included?

Students will complete seven challenges. When completing the activities, students will use critical thinking and inference skills. Challenges include activities such as:

• Decoding information about why the capital was moved from Williamsburg to Richmond
• Decoding an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence
• Solving puzzles with information about famous Virginians during the American Revolution
• Matching people, places, and events to their descriptions
• Decoding information about jobs held by Indigenous people, women, free Blacks, and enslaved Blacks during the Revolutionary War
• Identifying true and false facts about Virginia in the American Revolution
• Solving math problems related the American Revolution
• Matching locations and terms to their descriptions to create secret codes

Is a digital version included?

This resource includes two versions of the escape room. The first version is a PDF escape room that can be completed in a classroom.

The second version is a digital escape room that can be completed in Google Forms. The digital escape room is self-checking so that students can review the answers to their work even when learning remotely.
