Virginia Studies: Reconstruction Jeopardy Game (SOLs VS.8,9) – PowerPoint & Google Slides

This Virginia Studies Reconstruction Jeopardy Game includes a fun, Jeopardy-style game to review the Reconstruction Amendments, Freedmen’s Bureau, Black Codes and Jim Crow laws, and the growth of Virginia in the late 1800s. Versions of the review game are included for both PowerPoint and Google Slides.

What will students review with this Virginia Studies Reconstruction Jeopardy Game?

25 questions are included in a Jeopardy-style game to review and practice the following skills:

• describe the Reconstruction amendments (13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments)
• explain the effects of Reconstruction on Virginia
• describe the role of the Freedmen’s Bureau and Freedmen’s schools after the Civil War
• describe the election of John Mercer Langston to Congress
• describe the effect of the Supreme Court’s decision in Plessy v. Ferguson
• analyze the effects of sharecropping, segregation, Black Codes, and Jim Crow laws
• explain the importance of railroads, new industries, and the growth of cities to Virginia’s economic development in the late 1800s
• explain the economic and social transition from a rural society to a more urban society

Each question is linked to a slide with the answer so that students can quickly and easily check their answers.

What formats of the game are provided?

This resource includes versions of the Reconstruction Jeopardy Game for BOTH PowerPoint and Google Slides. The questions used with each version are the same.

How is this Virginia Studies interactive game played?

The PowerPoint version of this Jeopardy-style game should be played in presentation mode. Category values disappear when they are clicked on. The category values can be reset anytime by exiting the presentation and reopening it. You can type scores onto a scoreboard while playing in presentation mode. The presentation has been coded to help you easily navigate from the category board to questions and answers without scrolling.

The Google Slides version of this Jeopardy-style review game should be played in full screen, edit mode. Instructions and a video tutorial are provided that show how this is done. You can type scores onto a scoreboard but the category values do not disappear when they are clicked on. This is a limitation of Google Slides. But, markers are provided alongside the category board that you can drag and drop over the category values after they have been used. The presentation has been coded to help you easily navigate from the category board to questions and answers without scrolling.

This Reconstruction Jeopardy Game is specifically created to align with the 2023 Virginia History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOLs). Virginia Studies SOLs VS.8 and VS.9 are covered.
