Colonial Virginia Escape Room – VA SOL VS.4

Are you looking for a fun way to review colonial Virginia? Look no further! This Colonial Virginia Escape Room has everything you need! Whether teaching Virginia Studies remotely or in-person, this classroom escape room is easy to set up, and students will have lots of fun reviewing what they have learned!

In this Colonial Virginia Escape Room, students are in the process of time traveling back in time to study colonial Virginia when their time machine malfunctions! The only way to repair the time machine and return to the present is for students to successfully complete six challenges.

What will students learn with this classroom escape room?

Topics covered:

• how the culture of colonial Virginia reflected the culture of Indigenous people, European immigrants (English, Germans, and Scots-Irish, and Africans)
• where cultural groups settled on a map of Virginia
• the differences between indentured servants and enslaved people
• laws that established race-based enslavement
• the reasons for relocating Virginia’s capital from Jamestown to Williamsburg
• the importance and influence of agriculture and tobacco for Virginia’s economy
• The ways people exchanged goods and services in colonial Virginia

What escape room activities are included?

Students will complete six challenges. When completing the activities, students will use critical thinking and inference skills. Challenges include activities such as:

• Using a key to determine where the English, Africans, Germans, Scots-Irish, and Indigenous people  settled on a map of Virginia
• Matching economic terms to their descriptions to create a secret code
• Decoding information about why the capital was moved from Jamestown to Williamsburg
• Unscrambling information about Virginia laws that established race-based enslavement
• Identifying true and false facts about colonial Virginia
• Solving math problems related to colonial Virginia
• Matching locations and terms to their descriptions to create secret codes

Is a digital version included?

This resource includes two versions of the escape room. The first version is a PDF escape room that can be completed in a classroom.

The second version is a digital escape room that can be completed in Google Forms. The digital escape room is self-checking so that students can review the answers to their work even when learning remotely.
