• explain the roles of James Madison and why he is called the “Father of the Constitution”
• explain the roles of Patrick Henry and the significance of his “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech
• identify the main ideas of the Virginia Declaration of Rights by George Mason and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom by Thomas Jefferson
• explain how the Virginia Declaration of Rights and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom influenced the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution of Virginia
• describe the characteristics of American government as outlined in the Constitution including representative democracy, limited government, separation of powers, checks and balances, and federalism
• analyze the Preamble of the Constitution and explain the significance of the phrase “We the People of the United States of America”
• summarize the history of Constitution Day and explain why we celebrate the Constitution
• explain how geographical features and technological advances impacted the western movement in the first half of the 1800s
• explain causes and events of Nat Turner’s Rebellion and how it impacted the institution of slavery
