Are you looking for a fun way to review Virginia’s role in the establishment and growth of the new nation? Look no further! This Virginia Studies: A New Nation Escape Room has everything you need! Whether teaching Virginia Studies remotely or in-person, this classroom escape room is easy to set up, and students will have lots of fun reviewing what they have learned!

In this Virginia Studies: A New Nation Escape Room, students are in the process of time traveling back in time to study Virginia’s role in the establishment of the United States when their time machine malfunctions! The only way to repair the time machine and return to the present is for students to successfully complete six challenges.

• the roles of George Washington and why he is called the “Father of Our Country”
• the roles of James Madison and why he is called the “Father of the Constitution”
• the roles of Patrick Henry and the significance of his “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech
• the main ideas of the Virginia Declaration of Rights by George Mason and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom by Thomas Jefferson
• how the Virginia Declaration of Rights and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom influenced the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution of Virginia
• the Preamble of the Constitution and explain the significance of the phrase “We the People of the United States of America”
• geographical features and technological advances impacted the western movement in the first half of the 1800s
• Nat Turner’s Rebellion

What escape room activities are included?

Students will complete six challenges. When completing the activities, students will use critical thinking and inference skills. Challenges include activities such as:

• Decoding excerpts from the Virginia Declaration of Rights and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom
• Solving puzzles with information about famous Virginians
• Identifying true and false facts related to Virginia’s role in the establishment of the United States
• Solving math problems related to Virginia Studies
• Unscrambling information about the migration of Virginians
• Matching important people and terms to their descriptions to create secret codes

Is a digital version included?

This resource includes two versions of the escape room. The first version is a PDF escape room that can be completed in a classroom.

The second version is a digital escape room that can be completed in Google Forms. The digital escape room is self-checking so that students can review the answers to their work even when learning remotely.
