What topics are covered in this Reconstruction Unit?

This Reconstruction Unit includes 5 detailed lesson plans. All lessons are hands-on and incorporate literacy skills. Students will investigate–

• the impact of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the political aftermath of the Civil War
• leaders of Reconstruction including Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Frederick Douglass, Hiram Revels, and Andrew Johnson
• the similarities and differences between Reconstruction plans including Lincoln’s 10 Percent Plan, the Wade-Davis Bill, and Andrew Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan
• laws that gave more rights to African Americans including the Reconstruction Amendments and the Civil Rights Act of 1866
• laws and systems that negatively affected African Americans including sharecropping, Black Codes, lynching, and preventing people of color from voting
• how the Freedmen’s Bureau affected African Americans
• how the Election of 1876 led to the end of Reconstruction
