North America Geography Escape Room – VA SOL USI.1

Are you looking for a fun way to review the geography of North America? Look no further! This North America Geography Escape Room has everything you need! Whether teaching remotely or in-person, this classroom escape room is easy to set up, and students will have lots of fun reviewing what they have learned!

In this North America Geography Escape Room students find themselves trapped! The only way to escape is for students to successfully complete seven challenges that require them to use critical thinking skills as they review social studies skills.

What will students learn with this classroom escape room?

Topics covered:

• The locations of the seven continents and five major oceans
• The location of North America in relation to the other continents and oceans
• The locations and characteristics of major bodies of water in North America including the Great Lakes, Mississippi River, Missouri River, Ohio River, Columbia River, Colorado River, Rio Grande, St. Lawrence River, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Gulf of Mexico
• The locations and characteristics of the geographic regions of North America including the Coastal Plain, Appalachian Mountains, Canadian Shield, Interior Lowlands, Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, Basin and Range, and Coastal Ranges.
• The locations of the 50 states

What escape room activities are included?

Students will complete seven challenges. When completing the activities, students will use critical thinking and inference skills. Challenges include activities such as:

• Matching puzzle pieces to create a code
• Labeling a map by using a key to decode information
• Using a key to decode information about the characteristics of regions
• Identifying true and false facts
• Solving math problems to reveal a code
• Matching terms to their descriptions

Is a digital version included?

This resource includes two versions of the escape room. The first version is a PDF escape room that can be completed in a classroom.

The second version is a digital escape room that can be completed in Google Forms. The digital escape room is self-checking so that students can review the answers to their work even when learning remotely.

What standards are covered?

This North America Geography Escape Room is specifically aligned with the 2023 Virginia U.S. History SOL USI.1, although it closely matches most U.S. History standards related to teaching about the continents and oceans, geographic regions of North America, and the 50 states can be found here.
