6 Detailed lesson plans are included to help students learn and practice the following skills–
- Determine the product of two numbers. Factors do not exceed 2-digits by 2-digits and products do not exceed the thousandths place. Throughout the unit, there are problems with one decimal factor and problems with two decimal factors.
- Estimate the product of two numbers involving decimals.
- Use multiple representations to model multiplication of decimals and whole numbers.
- Create and solve single-step and multi-step practical problems involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication of decimals.
What strategies are used to teach multiplying decimals?
The following multiplication strategies are taught in these lesson plans:
- Repeated addition
- Using place value models such as grids and base-10 blocks
- Standard algorithm
- Partial products
- Box method
- Lattice method
For each strategy, there is an anchor chart that provides step-by-step instructions and visual aids for using the strategy to solve.
Each lesson includes worksheets that require students to use the specific strategy taught AND worksheets and games that can be used with any strategy. The quiz and the test allow students to choose any strategy to solve.
