Harlem Renaissance Escape Room – VA SOL USII.5e

Are you looking for a fun way to review the Harlem Renaissance? Look no further! This Harlem Renaissance Escape Room has everything you need! Whether teaching remotely or in-person, this classroom escape room is easy to set up, and students will have lots of fun reviewing what they have learned!

In this Harlem Renaissance Escape Room, students are in the process of time traveling back in time to study the Harlem Renaissance when their time machine malfunctions! The only way to repair the time machine and return to the present is for students to successfully complete eight challenges.

What will students learn with this classroom escape room?

Students will examine major works created by:

• Jacob Lawrence
• Langston Hughes
• Countee Cullen
• Duke Ellington
• Louis Armstrong
• Bessie Smith
• Jessie Fauset
• Zora Neale Hurston

What escape room activities are included?

Students will complete eight challenges. When completing the activities, students will use critical thinking and inference skills. Challenges include activities such as:

• Decoding famous Louis Armstrong song titles
• Solving puzzles of paintings by Jacob Lawrence to reveal hidden codes
• Unscrambling the titles of famous Duke Ellington songs
• Determining the missing words from Bessie Smith’s lyrics using a video clip
• Decoding poems by Langston Hughes and Countee Cullen
• Completing a Maze to find the letters needed to create titles for novels written by Jessie Fauset and Zora Neale Hurston
• Matching the historical figures to what they did to reveal a secret code

Is a digital version included?

This resource includes two versions of the escape room. The first version is a PDF escape room that can be completed in a classroom.

The second version is a digital escape room that can be completed in Google Forms. The digital escape room is self-checking so that students can review the answers to their work even when learning remotely.

What standards are covered?

This Harlem Renaissance Escape Room is specifically aligned with the 2023 Virginia U.S. History SOL USII.5e, although it closely matches most U.S. History standards related to people and major works of the Harlem Renaissance.
