This Colonial Virginia Unit includes 6 detailed lesson plans. All lessons are hands-on and incorporate literacy skills. Students will–
- explain how the culture of colonial Virginia reflected the culture of Indigenous people, European immigrants (English, Germans, and Scots-Irish, and Africans)
- show where cultural groups settled on a map of Virginia
- distinguish between indentured servants and enslaved people
- describe laws in the 1600s and 1705 that established race-based enslavement
- explain the reasons for relocating Virginia’s capital from Jamestown to Williamsburg
- explain the importance and influence of agriculture
- explain how Virginia’s cash crop (tobacco) contributed to race-based enslavement
- describe ways people exchanged goods and services in colonial Virginia
