Civil War Task Cards are a no-prep, fun way to review the causes, events, important people, and outcomes of the Civil War.

Civil War Task Cards includes 28 task cards, a student response worksheet, and an answer key. Questions are multiple choice, multiple select, matching, and ordering.

What will students review with these task cards?

With these Civil War Task Cards, students will:

• how slavery and its expansion was the primary cause of the cultural, economic, and constitutional issues that divided the nation and led to the secession of southern states
• the differences in the economies of the North and the South and how those economies impacted the outcome of the war
• the expansion of slavery into new territories and states including the Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act
• slave states and free states
• President Abraham Lincoln’s involvement in the Civil War including the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address
• people who played a role in the Civil War including Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, William Tecumseh Sherman, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Frederick Douglass, Robert Smalls, John Brown Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Van Lew, Mary Bowser, and Clara Barton
• major events including Fort Sumter, the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Vicksburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the surrender at Appomattox Court House
• the role of women and Indigenous people in the Civil War
• outcomes of the Civil War

What standards are covered?

These Civil War Task Cards are specifically aligned with the 2023 Virginia U.S. History SOL USI.9, although the task cards closely match most U.S. History standards related to the causes, events, important people, and outcomes of the Civil War.

Is a digital version included?

These Civil War Task Cards resource includes BOTH a digital version and a PDF version. The digital version can be accessed through Google Forms and allows students to easily self-check their work. You can also use the Google Forms task cards to track student progress.

What if I want to create my own social studies task cards?
