What topics are covered in this Civil Rights Movement Unit?

This Civil Rights Movement Unit includes 5 detailed lesson plans. All lessons are hands-on and incorporate literacy skills. Students will investigate–

• the purpose and goals of the Civil Rights Movement
• how urban renewal plans and other legislation impacted Black communities such as Jackson Ward and Vinegar Hill, including the Housing Law of 1937, the Housing Acts of 1949 and 1954, the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation, redlining, and the federal highway systems
• the role of key leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Barbara Johns, Emmett Till, Malcolm X, Medgar Evers, John Lewis, Ruby Bridges, Robert Kennedy, Jonathan Daniels, Dorothy Height, and Evelyn T. Butts
• the role groups and organizations played in the Civil Rights Movement, including the NAACP and the Freedom Riders
• the outcomes of significant civil rights events, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the March on Washington, King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and the Salem to Montgomery Marches
• examples of passive resistance, including boycotts, sit-ins, marches, and other peaceful protests
• legislation and court causes that impacted the rights of people of color, including Plessy v. Ferguson, Brown v. Board of Education, Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967
