Civics Escape Room


Are you looking for a fun way to review civics and government? Look no further! This low-prep Civics Escape Room is the perfect review activity to use at the end of a unit or before state testing! Six fun puzzles and challenges are included to help students review basic concepts about civics such as rules and laws, responsibilities of a good citizen, and the purpose of government. Digital and in-person (PDF) versions are included.

In Civics Escape Room students find themselves trapped! The only way for students to escape is to successfully complete six challenges. Whether teaching in-person or virtually, this classroom escape room is easy to set up and students will have lots of fun reviewing what they have learned!

What will students learn with this classroom escape room?

Challenges can be used to introduce students to or to help students review civics and government skills that are taught at the elementary level. With these escape room activities, students will learn about:

  • responsibilities of a good citizen
  • examples of rules and laws
  • purpose of rules and laws
  • purpose of government
  • what government does at the local, state, and national levels
  • rights all Americans have
  • ways Americans can serve their community and country

What escape room activities are included?

Challenges require students to use critical thinking and inference skills. Challenges include activities such as:

  • solving math problems to reveal true facts about civics and government
  • decoding messages to learn fun facts about ways Americans can serve their country and the rights all Americans have
  • matching terms related to civics and government to a correct description
  • sorting rules and laws
  • identifying examples of good citizenship to create a code

Is a digital version included?

This resource includes two versions of the escape room. The first version is a PDF escape room that can be completed in a classroom.

The second version is a digital escape room that can be completed in Google Forms. The digital escape room is self-checking so that students can review the answers to their work even when learning remotely.

What standards are covered?

This escape room is aligned with the third-grade social studies SOLs 3.11, 3.12, and 3.13.

While this civics escape room is specifically aligned to the Virginia SOLs, it also closely matches most civics and government standards for elementary students.
