American Revolution Escape Room – VA SOL USI.6

Are you looking for a fun way to review the American Revolution? Look no further! This American Revolution Escape Room has everything you need! Whether teaching remotely or in-person, this classroom escape room is easy to set up, and students will have lots of fun reviewing what they have learned!

In this American Revolution Escape Room, students are in the process of time traveling back in time to study the events before, during, and after the Revolutionary War when their time machine malfunctions! The only way to repair the time machine and return to the present is for students to successfully complete seven challenges.

What will students learn with this classroom escape room?

Topics covered:

• people who played an important role during the American Revolution including Patrick Henry, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Lord Cornwallis, and the Marquis de Lafayette
• events of the American Revolution including the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Battles of Lexington and Concord, Battle of Saratoga, Yorktown, and the Treaty of Paris
• the reasons for British control and taxation
• the reasons for American dissatisfaction with the British

What escape room activities are included?

Students will complete seven challenges. When completing the activities, students will use critical thinking and inference skills. Challenges include activities such as:

• decoding messages to read excerpts of Common Sense and the Declaration of Independence
• decoding messages to learn more about the ideas of key figures during the American Revolution
• identifying whether important figures supported the British or the American colonists
• reading information to infer whether a person was a loyalist or a patriot
• sorting the reasons for British taxation and colonial dissatisfaction
• matching important events to descriptions of those events

Is a digital version included?

This resource includes two versions of the escape room. The first version is a PDF escape room that can be completed in a classroom.

The second version is a digital escape room that can be completed in Google Forms. The digital escape room is self-checking so that students can review the answers to their work even when learning remotely.

What standards are covered?

This American Revolution Escape Room is specifically aligned with the 2023 Virginia U.S. History SOL USI.6, although it closely matches most U.S. History standards related to events that took place before, during, and after the Revolutionary War.
