Early Explorers Task Cards – VA SOL USI.3

Early Explorers Task Cards are a no-prep, fun way to review the motivations for, obstacles to, and accomplishments of Spanish, French, English, Portuguese, and Dutch exploration.

Early Explorers Task Cards includes 28 task cards, a student response worksheet, and an answer key. Questions are multiple choice and multiple select.

What will students review with these task cards?

With these Early Explorers Task Cards, students will:

• Spanish exploration (Christopher Columbus, Juan Ponce de Leon, Hernando Cortes, Francisco Coronado)
• French exploration (Jacques Cartier, Samuel de Champlain, Robert La Salle)
• English exploration (John Cabot)
• Portuguese exploration (Pedro Cabral)
• Dutch exploration (Henry Hudson)
• cultural and economic interactions between Indigenous people and Europeans that led to cooperation and conflict

Students will compare and contrast the motivations for, obstacles to, and accomplishments of the European explorers.

What standards are covered?

These Early Explorers Task Cards are specifically aligned with the 2023 Virginia U.S. History SOL USI.3, although the task cards closely match most U.S. History standards related to European explorers.

Is a digital version included?

These Early Explorers Task Cards resource includes BOTH a digital version and a PDF version. The digital version can be accessed through Google Forms and allows students to easily self-check their work. You can also use the Google Forms task cards to track student progress.

When you purchase this product, you will be given access to a link that will allow you to open the file in Google Forms. You’ll then share that file with your students.

What if I want to create my own social studies task cards?

Four blank task cards are included so that you can create additional questions, if needed. For these task cards, you will print the blank cards and write your questions directly on the cards.

Other Information:

I recommend printing these task cards in color and laminating so that they can easily be reused from year to year, although this is not necessary. These task cards also print and are easy to read in grayscale.
