This Civil War Jeopardy Game includes a fun, Jeopardy-style game to review the causes, events, and outcomes of the Civil War. Versions of the review game are included for both PowerPoint and Google Slides.

What will students review with this Civil War Jeopardy Game?

25 questions are included in a Jeopardy-style game to review and practice the following skills:

• how slavery and its expansion was the primary cause of the cultural, economic, and constitutional issues that divided the nation
• the differences in the economies of the North and the South, growth of agriculture and industry, and how those economies impacted the outcome of the war
• the secession of Southern states
• the Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, Kansas-Nebraska Act, and Bleeding Kansas
• people who played an important role in the Civil War including Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, William Tecumseh Sherman, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Frederick Douglass, Robert Smalls, and John Brown
• women in the Civil War including Clara Barton, Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Van Lew, and Mary Bowser
• the perspectives of Indigenous people during the war
• Lincoln’s Inaugural Address, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, and Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address
• important battles and events including Fort Sumter, Fort Sumter, the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Vicksburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, Sherman’s March to Sea, and the surrender at Appomattox Court House
• strategic positions, such as Washington, D.C., Fort Monroe, and Richmond

Each question is linked to a slide with the answer so that students can quickly and easily check their answers.

What formats of the game are provided?

This resource includes versions of the Civil War Jeopardy Game for BOTH PowerPoint and Google Slides. The questions used with each version are the same.

How is this US History interactive game played?

The PowerPoint version of this Jeopardy-style game should be played in presentation mode. Category values disappear when they are clicked on. The category values can be reset anytime by exiting the presentation and reopening it. You can type scores onto a scoreboard while playing in presentation mode. The presentation has been coded to help you easily navigate from the category board to questions and answers without scrolling.

The Google Slides version of this Jeopardy-style review game should be played in full screen, edit mode. Instructions and a video tutorial are provided that show how this is done. You can type scores onto a scoreboard but the category values do not disappear when they are clicked on. This is a limitation of Google Slides. But, markers are provided alongside the category board that you can drag and drop over the category values after they have been used. The presentation has been coded to help you easily navigate from the category board to questions and answers without scrolling.

What standards are covered?

This Civil War Jeopardy Game is specifically created to align with the 2023 Virginia History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOLs). Virginia SOL USI.9 is covered, although the questions closely align with most social studies standards related to the causes, events, and outcomes of the Civil War.
