What topics are covered in this Civil War Unit?
This Civil War Unit includes 10 detailed lesson plans. All lessons are hands-on and incorporate literacy skills. Students will investigate–
- how slavery and its expansion was the primary cause of the cultural, economic, and constitutional issues that divided the nation
- the differences in the economies of the North and the South, growth of agriculture and industry, and how those economies impacted the outcome of the war
- the secession of Southern states
- Confederate States, Union States, and border states on a map
- the Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, Kansas-Nebraska Act, and Bleeding Kansas
- people who played an important role in the Civil War including Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, William Tecumseh Sherman, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Frederick Douglass, Robert Smalls, and John Brown
- women in the Civil War including Clara Barton, Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Van Lew, and Mary Bowser
- the perspectives of Union and Confederate soldiers, Indigenous people, women, European Americans, and enslaved and free Blacks during the war
- Lincoln’s Inaugural Address, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, and Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address
- important battles and events including Fort Sumter, Fort Sumter, the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Vicksburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, Sherman’s March to Sea, and the surrender at Appomattox Court House
- the strategic positions of Washington, D.C., Fort Monroe, and Richmond
